Marie Antoinette At Alpha Stamps

I am SO IN LOVE with this new stamp set from Alpha Stamps called, "How's My Hair". What a perfect collection for me! Ever since I received it in my Design Team kit it has been hard to keep it a secret! Below is one piece of work that I did using these stamps and the cute new chipboard shoes they have.

Those metal "skirts" that are attached to my characters are actually old light bulbs from my husband's lab. He is an AMAZING electrical engineer and sometimes it's hard not to "borrow" some of his cool electrical bits & bobs and thing-a-ma-jigs.

And specking of shoes, Alpha Stamps just listed a new swap where you swap just that! Shoes! Here are some more details:

We're hosting a Marie Antoinette Swap (Off With Her Shoes!) using the new 18th c Woman's Chipboard Shoes (the larger size shoes for this swap).

Think over the top, frou-frou fancy shoes befitting Marie Antoinette herself! Lace, ribbons, Dresden, jewels, netting, silk, satin, gorgeous paper "patterns," hearts, flowers, fancy buttons and, of course, Marie herself!

This swap will be 3 for 3. (Create 3 different shoes with embellishments and receive 3 in return, all by different artists!) Please do not send in more than TWO sets (aka: maximum of 6 shoes).

An Inspirational Read

Last year I was blessed with a win from my friend Terri's blog. The prize was an autographed copy of her son's book: To Live, To Think, To Hope - Inspirational Quotes by Helen Keller.

I've always been in awe of this amazing woman. I am even more so after reading this book and the way that Matthew Gordon organized the material and the research that he did. He meticulously grouped sections together by theme and gave wonderful details of Helen's life as an introduction to each one. I learned so much about Helen, her life and he even included some wonderful photos I had not seen before. Even better, my oldest saw the book and loved reading about this inspirational and giving woman. Great for all ages!

I also received a beautiful bookmark from Matthew's fiance Christine Fredendall. She is a wonderfully unique artist with a mesmerizing Etsy shop, Handmade Creations by Christine Frendendall. All of her pieces are hand made originals and she does custom orders as well.

I hope you will pay them both a visit. It is such a blessing to have such talented people sharing the things they love with others. Many thanks to Terri, Matthew and Christine for these special gifts! Thanks for visiting and have a great day!

Happy New Year everyone! Gosh, where do I begin on this post? I have neglected my blog for a while now and feel guilty for that. I've been in a blog funk and don't know what directions to take with it. I kind of understand why some people end one blog and begin another. But I'm not going to do that here. I love this place and all of my followers.

My family and I had an amazing Christmas. Just watching my children and the happiness on their faces was such a gift. We had so much quality time together and I was so sad when my amazing hubby had to go back to work and the kiddos had to go back to school. As Brandon Flowers of The Killers (my favorite band) recently said, "When you have children it opens up a part of your heart that you never knew you had". Well, it was something like that and it just made me love him more. Can't wait for their next album, which they are working on now. Sorry, had a Killer distraction there for a minute.

Of course, my art is the other important part of my life. I recently created some awesome characters using some old light bulbs from my hubby's lab. He is an electrical engineer. I will post a pic of them soon, but will add that I used some new Alpha Stamps products on them that I am In LoVe WiTh! This past Design Team kit was my favorite ever, and it will soon be announced why so stay tuned.

The Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group is another important part of my life. I am a Committee Member for this group and we (Terri, Melanie, Debi and I) all work together to keep it running smoothly with wonderful artists and swaps. Terri Gordon is the new owner and although Rella has stepped down, she is still with us. We have all sorts of wonderful new Valentine Swaps listed and I am currently making a "body" for a half doll that I found. We had a swap to create a bag of supplies for our partner, so that they could make a beautiful body for their half doll. I have never done this before, but it's not stopping me. I have had so many wonderful challenges come my way through this group and have grown tremendously as an artist.

I think this year, I just want to spend more quality time with my family, keep on creating my Alpha Stamps Design Team work and swaps, as well as create with my Marie group (love those girls). But I also want to try to sell more of what I make, I am such a hoarder when it comes to my work. I need to get over that. I mean, how much of my own artwork can I stuff into my home? Why not sell it and let it bring a smile to someone else? We'll see...

Christmas in Paris Shadow Box Swap

Oh my gosh! It's a miracle! I'm finally doing a post on my blog. Poor thing is so neglected and I just don't know what my problem has been. I love my blog and all of you who visit so it's time for me to shape up. And what better way then to show you the Shadow Box I made for the amazing Kris at Nostalgic Collage. She has been an inspiration of mine for some time now so I was thrilled to make the above box for her. But look below at the one she made for me. It's amazing with all of it's vintage splendor. Thank you so much Kris for this treasured gift and a huge thanks to Debi from Life in My Studio who hosted this wonderful swap over at our Marie Antoinette group! What a wonderful project for us all! Hope you are full of the Christmas Spirit and enjoying this wonderful time of year.

My Beloved Studio

I'm so blessed to have a space I can call my own. Personally, I think all Moms should have one and be able to escape and have some "me time" on a daily basis. Life has been busy, especially with helping Mom and Dad since Dad had his knee replaced. He has had an amazing recovery though. Mom has gone from being the "hoarder" that grew up during the Depression, to the "get rid of it I'm never going to use it" gal. Because of her early Dementia, I immediatly take things out of the house and put it in the car so that she will not sort through it again. So now, my house is stuffed! I have been getting rid of stuff as well, so my hubby just gets to make even more trips to the local thrift shop to drop it off. I'm pooped! But late at night, when the kiddos are in bed and I have a bit of time to myself, I just start to obsessively sort and arrange. I enjoy it and it helps me feel like I have accomplished something for myself during the day.

I have rearranged my studio and have also gathered "collections" of items together more. I had no idea I had so many of my favorite German doll heads until now! I love having them all on this shelf with antique photos behind them. I've been organizing my art materials into non viewable spots more and keeping my treasures out all around me.

I love my treasures on this book shelf. It holds all of my old ledgers, photo albums full of tin types, old diaries found on ebay and other cool items. I seem to be obsessed with old medical items at the moment. And whats not to love about a collection of old doll heads!

And of course my Halloween corner is a visual favorite! I have some more lovely art from friends to add to this spot and how bout those old motorcycle goggles on my phrenology head! LOVE IT!

This spot used to be home to my vintage glass glitter. Now it is a spot to display my favorite vintage pictures and tins, ephemera and toys, phone dials, harp strings, number "7"s, cow bells, shaving goods, artwork, pocket watches and more. I sometimes just stop on my way past and stare.

I also have my composition dolls all together now along with some newer dolls below. They are all able to see me now as I work at either of my desks and each have their own doll to keep them company.

I found the Marie Antoinette doll on ebay one night while looking for a Marie Antoinette doll dress for my Blythe. I'm still looking. Anyone out there know where I can get one or know someone who can make one for me? About a month later, I found her sister on the left at a local shop. About a month after that, my BFF and I were out at the flea market one day and she found the beauty on the right in her original box. It is so worn and dirty, but it is just a treasure to me. Poor things head fell off and is just barely holden on, but like I tell my girls, she was once very loved and should still be loved now.

So theres just a little peak into my newer studio. I missed "Where Bloggers Create" this past year, but still need to show how my beloved studio has changed over the past year. I have some great items like old dressers, a library card catalog and other great pieces and have rid my space of plastic drawers. I love my space and thank God and my husband for it every single day. I hope you have a space to call your own as well. If not, demand it. You deserve one too! Thanks for stopping by!

New French Ledger Pages Now Listed

Oh how I love my French Ledger Pages! I have finally listed some from my latest batch in my Etsy shop. These are from the 1920s and the writing is so perfect. I feel bad at times using these in my artwork. The one who wrote this was so careful. But then I think it is better to enjoy them within my art then for them to sit covered in dust on a shelf. I'm happy to set up custom orders as well.

Goodness! I can't believe it has been so long since I last posted. My poor blog is so neglected. Life has been busy, but has many, many blessings. I had been staying with my mom while my dad recovered from knee surgery. It was a successful procedure and he is now home. They are so cute and missed each other so much. It was nice to stay with mom and brought us closer in a new way. She is not her old self. She has early dementia and it is very heart breaking to watch. But when we are together, the time is wonderful and appreciated. She really can't be left alone though and we are now in talks of the future. Never thought I would say it, but we all really need to live together. It's just not possible for dad to take care of mom on his own. And mom has become the "get rid of it" lady. She was a major hoarder (guess that's where I get it from) and now she is sorting things and getting it out. I can't believe how busy she kept me. I went from mom's to school for the girls, home for a bit, then back to mom's. After dad got home, I became his personal driver and took him to physical therapy and then helped out until it was time to get the girls. Today was the last day for me because he is back to driving on his own. Oddly, I'm kinda sad about it. Sorry, I'm rambling!

Almost Halloween

Where has the year gone? I can't believe Halloween is almost here! I have been sorting, cleaning out and rearranging my studio, but have been able to get some art work completed with enjoyment. Good thing, seeing how art is my "therapy".

I love the Halloween theme. I have a corner of my studio dedicated to it and can't wait to see what arches and ATCs I get in return. My good friend Terri from Designs By Terri Gordon hosted both of these swaps through the Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group. I found this black and white image of a "skeletal" Marie and was able to choose her colors myself. I love how she turned out!

Took me forever to get Marie's arm curved around that precious black cat. I just love black cats, and the #13. Must be why two of my cats are solid black. I'm still working on a Halloween themed cone (tussie mussie) as well as a witch hat for our annual gala. I'll share pictures of those as well as my returns very soon.

Here's a little house I made using supplies from Alpha Stamps. I had put the house together a few months ago, covering the whole thing with vintage French ledger pages. But I wasn't sure how I wanted to "finish" it off. Being on Alpha Stamps Design Team has it's many, many benefits. I get to see the new items that come out before anyone else and they have a great selection for one of my favorite themes. That would be during the fall, and especially during Halloween. I have one corner of my room devoted to different Halloween art and I think my Fortune Teller House will fit in perfectly.

What is the name of that movie with all of the killer dolls? Some of these look so life like that it would not be at all surprising if they started to move.

The doll above has crossed eyes. She reminds me a bit of the haunted doll that my mom had while growing up. Wait, I hated dolls back then. What am I doing? Well, I don't collect dolls like her. I like the composition dolls and the German doll heads. So that makes it okay, right?

Now she is precious. I want her for my collection. Wait, wasn't I going to make art with my dolls? NO, NEVER! Don't touch my dolls!!!!!

Marie Antoinette, the glamorous last queen of France, was notorious for many things--most of which she never did or said. Because history is written by the winners and she was the French Revolution's greatest victim, much of the information handed down about her lies somewhere between gross exaggeration and outright lies. Many people think she just went from heedless to headless, a bubble-headed spendthrift who was responsible for the revolution. So here are seven busted myths about the woman who became Marie Antoinette and the truth behind the propaganda.

1. Marie Antoinette never said, "Let them eat cake."

Let's lay this tired old saw to rest once and for all. The actual phrase was Qu'ils mangent de la brioche ("Let them eat brioche") and it may have been uttered by Maria Theresa, the Spanish-born queen of "the Sun King," Louis XIV. Marie Antoinette was, in fact, extremely generous to the starving peasantry and citizenry of France, making numerous contributions both financially and materially, to those in distress.

2. Marie Antoinette was not blond.

Despite the way she is always portrayed in the movies and in nearly all books about her, she was in fact a redhead, strawberry blond, to be precise. How do we know this? Her great enemy at court, Madame du Barry, mistress of King Louis XV, nastily nicknamed her "la petite rousse"--the little redhead.

3. Marie Antoinette was not French.

She was the 15th of 16 children, the youngest daughter of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria. Her May 1770 marriage at the age of 14 to Louis Auguste, the 15-year-old shy, nearsighted grandson of Louis XV, uniting the houses of Bourbon and Hapsburg, was the ultimate political and dynastic marriage, and was intended to erase nearly 950 years of enmity between their two countries. Unfortunately, being a foreigner in France, Marie Antoinette became the scapegoat for all of France's ills.

4. Marie Antoinette's passion for fashion didn't bankrupt France.

Cruelly nicknamed "Madame Deficit" starting around 1786, she did not bankrupt France, despite her passion for fashion and interior design. Nor were her extravagances the cause of the French Revolution. France's treasury was broke long before she arrived. And the kingdom spiraled deeper into debt when her husband, Louis XVI, agreed to help fund the American colonists during the American Revolution. Without French military aid, our national anthem might still be "God Save the Queen."

5. Marie Antoinette never milked her own cows.

Titled "Marie Antoinette. House where Marie Antoinette played farmerette," a photograph by Theodor Horydczak (ca. 1890-1971), depicts one of the quaint cottages in the hameau, or little peasant village, that Marie Antoinette commissioned to be built on the grounds of le Petit Trianon at Versailles. The hameau consisted of a working farm and dairy with residential cottages for a dozen or so impoverished farmers and their families. Far from being selfish, Marie Antoinette was charitable! The queen did treat her visitors to fresh milk, which was poured and stored in white Sèvres porcelain jugs with her monogram on them.

6. Marie Antoinette was not promiscuous.

Countless pamphlets and caricatures known as libelles depicted Marie Antoinette as wildly promiscuous, taking lovers of both genders. In fact, she remained a virgin for the first seven years of her marriage. She married the future Louis XVI when he was still Louis Auguste, dauphin of France, on May 16, 1770; and they didn't consummate their marriage until August 22, 1777!

7. Marie Antoinette was not the power behind the throne.

Once she became queen, Marie Antoinette was hardly Louis XVI's puppet master. Ironically, her mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, despaired of Antoinette's inability to "control" her husband. Marie Antoinette freely admitted that not only did she lack the talent for politics, but that Louis wouldn't permit her to have any input in his government. Although Antoinette did pressure her husband into making certain ministerial appointments, her influence upon him was grossly exaggerated.

Beautiful Friends

Life has been a bit tough over the last five months. But hopefully those challenges will be in the past soon. It amazes me the amount of truly giving friends I have made throughout the years while blogging and swapping. Some of these gals are so dear to me and have been some of the most supportive friends I have ever had that also bring a great deal of laughter to me as well. And that is such a blessing to me. To have people I have never met in person, many I have never even heard their voices, but I know they are there for me and would do anything in the world for me. It's a wonderful gift from God.

I have received many cards and gifts of support and cheer as well. I have those who are keeping my family in their prayers and touching base with me often to see how things are. It warms my heart. I haven't been as good at thanking you all, but I know you know I appreciate you so much. Thank you for the prayers, the emails and all of the thoughtfulness. I love you all so much!

I have other gifts that I really need to share. I feel badly for not doing so yet. My blog has been put on the back burner for a while, but hopefully I will be able to share more soon. Below is a gift from my friend Rhonda from A Little Bit French. She sent this picture to me after she made this gift so I am "stealing" it so that I can share my beautiful pocket board with you. She made it just for me, used many of my favorite "labels" and this wonderful stretchy fabric I adore. You might want to get a tissue before you look at this pic because if you are like me, you will drool as soon as you see it.

For those of you that know me, you know how much I love Rhonda's etsy shop, Parisgal56. And through her shop, we have become good friends. She is a wonderful and giving gal and I am blessed to have her to cheer my spirit.

After receiving this beautiful board, which will be added to my other treasures from her in my master bedroom, I just had to call her so I could thank her personally. I had been meaning to call her for some time. I dialed her number and when she answered it was, "Oh my gosh". Do you know I felt like I had talked to her a million times before when I was actually hearing her voice for the first time. It was great to connect and find that we had even more in common. And she has a similar laugh which really cracked me up!

I would have never guessed that by opening an etsy shop, creating a blog and joining swaps, my life would be changed so much with amazing friends. I love you all, appreciate your thoughts and prayers and hope to chat with even more of you. Thanks again to Rhonda for her wonderful friendship and I hope to chat with you again soon!

My Newest Piece of Art

I have always loved the collage sheet "Shrine Icons" made exclusively for Alpha Stamps by Teri Calia. I recently ordered not only a card stock copy, but a clear sticker sheet copy and transparency copy. I love to layer the images and use them alone as well. Just another thing I love about Alpha Stamps, is that they have this option with most of their collage sheets.

I found this shrine for 80% off at Joanns, so I scooped it up because I knew I would transform it into something wonderful. It had an oriental feel to it, with swoops of wood that came off of the "roof". I decided to remove them and then covered the seams with some Bronze Baroque Dresden.

Above I used some Bronze Thin Looped Dresden and some Copper colored Crinkle Wire. It was super easy to use, just stretch and wrap.

Above are some new Sacred Heart Charms that I painted with some No-Prep Metal Paint. Then, I glued them to the original handles to tie in with the "theme".

I painted these Foundations (Box Feet) by Tim Holtz as well. They are huge and very sturdy.

After distressing this shrine with a hammer, sandpaper, and inks, I glued on some of my collection of vintage Catholic charms and Crucifixes. Just gave the shrine more of an old feel to it.

When you open the shrine, you are greeted with some more wonderful items. The Sacred Heart images are more from the "Shrine Icons" collage sheet and I also used some other images. More of my collection of charms rest on the shelves as well as some goodies from my friend Rhonda at A Little Bit French, and a vintage Holy Water Bottle from Paris. Can you believe I found that right here in Tennessee? I know, shocking. And if you like handmade beauty with a vintage feel, you should visit Rhonda's Etsy Shop. I have several other items that I am using to make a Mary collage. It's my favorite etsy shop so be sure to stop by.

For the inside of the doors, as well as the shrine, I added some gold leaf and added some brown ink over it to age it a bit. I used the following Alpha Stamps collage sheets and put melted bees wax over them. It gave it a really great effect. I also used more Dresden to frame the images as well as some brass elements.

These images were actually ahdered to a piece of foam packaging. It made it appear to be a actuall frame, but it's just all created from Dresden and these little Brass Box Feet.

I really love how my project came out, and how all of these things I have had for some time now, came together and united as one. It's what I love about creating art work. I now have it proudly displayed in my master bedroom, but think I am going to put it on the mantle downstairs.

Below are the aprons that I made for the "Retro Recipe Book Swap" over at the Alpha Stamps Yahoo Group. It was nice to do something different and work with these cute chipboard dressforms and fancy them up. Everything that I used, with the exeption of some vintage trim and lace here and there, is from Alpha Stamps. Oh, and the recipes are from an old cookbook that belonged to my amazing Granma Betty. Gosh I miss her.

My Beautiful New Girls

So guess what ParisGal Rhonda and all those who follow? My new girls came! I was so, so nervous. After I knew my "haunted" girls were coming, I thought to myself, "OMG! What have I done?" I had this huge butterfly in my tummy about their arrival and my bFff kept saying, "What were you thinking?" So then I had a chat with my Mom, the doll lady, and she thought it was aOK. I decided that when the girls arrived, I would have a nice chat with them first.

Every time I thought I heard the mailman, my heart lept. Where on earth was he? Ends up, he came and I didn't even know it, and when I went down to the road to move my car into my driveway, I saw a box by my mailbox. I gasped and said, "Why did he leave my package here and not up on the porch?" As I walked up the driveway, I made the sign of the cross over the box several times to "bless" them.

I ran to my porch and eagerly opened my package. As I opened the box, I had my little "chat" and told them they were welcome in my home, but that it was a home of God and that they were not aloud to scare anyone. I didn't want to hear voices in the middle of the night because that would freak me out and they were especially not aloud to scare my "real" girls. If my neighbors were watching, they would have thought I was crazy.

As I unwrapped each doll, I realized just how much more beautiful they were in person. When I had them all out, I called my "real girls" out to the front porch. Now this is where it gets kind of odd. Usually, my "real girls" don't get into my dolls too much, but they were so magnatized to these three. We ended up with one doll each, sitting on the swing, enjoying our new friends. Next thing I know, my youngest says, "This ones name is Honey Bell". Here is a doll, with no eyes, and she is loving it and calling it Honey Bell. Not a name I would think she would say, with the "Bell" on the end. Next, my oldest says, "And this one's name is Amber". I agreed and then asked about the final doll. My oldest wanted to name it after herself, and then a friend. I said, "No, let's give her a name of her own. What do you think she wants to be called?" They both silently studied the doll and then my oldest said, "Dorthy". Not a common name either. But it fit and we all enjoyed the dolls a bit longer before bringing them inside.

Our first night, I was a little creeped out. I reminded the "girls" not to disturb us during the night and we covered them in a blanket that was mine as a child and things seemed fine. I said a little prayer and told them to be at peace and "go to the light" if they hadn't already.

It's been a great time thus far, and hopefully will continue to be. Since they've arrived, the girls have given them clothes and toys and they just have this sweet aura about them (knock on wood). They feel good when you hold them. I do seem to bless them often and tell them to be at peace and go to the light. Hopefully if there was a little spirit attached to these dolls, it has found peace. I still need to find a good spot for them in my studio, and do often look to see if they are still as I left them (feet crossed, same tilt). I know, it's just a crazy story, isn't it?

I've Been Bitten

I've been bitten, by the Blythe bug! After seeing the one dressed as Marie Antoinette (see post a few down) I searched for a bit before I found her. My Blythe, that I will eventually alter into Marie. I have a lot to learn before I can do it, and need to find/make her the perfect gown as well. I've always loved seeing the pictures that people take of their beloved Blythes. Now I have jumped on board!

My Love of Composition Dolls

As a teenager, I couldn't stand my mom's collection of dolls. Forget putting the china in the china cabinet, ours was full of dolls. We also had a corner cabinet with one doll, I swear it was haunted. My friends and I hated it and it's eyes would follow you around. You know the ones that have glass eyes and the open mouth with teeth and tongue. So now here I am, almost 30 years later (ouch) with a collection of my own. And some of them are a tad creepy as well. My daughter's friends come in my studio sometimes to say hello and add, "Ms. Rhonda, that doll is creepy". But something about some of them sing to me, and although I purchased some to use in art, I just can't do it. I love them the way they are. OH MY GOSH! Someone help me! I've become my mother! (runs from room screaming with arms waving in air).

Above are my composition dolls. It's a new obsession of many. The one on the lower right (above) that is just a head, I swear I feel like if I touch it's mouth, it will bite right down on my finger. And the head on the far right, I had no desire for it at first. It came with some German doll heads I had won on ebay. But isn't it precious! I love it's little cone hat that I made for it and the glasses from a "Build A Bear" gift.

Well, below you will find my three new girls. They should be arriving in the mail soon. There's one little thing about this girls that worries me just a bit. Supposidly, they are haunted. Do any of you have an item that is "haunted"? There is a new show on SciFi called, "Haunted Collection" where this guy goes around and finds the "haunted" object in a home/business and when he finds the right one, and takes it away, the haunting apparently stops.

Here is the info that was given about these dolls:

"These dolls come from same estate as my last doll auction. I had originally planned on selling these three dolls separately, but due to their spiritual connection with one another, I am unable to sell them apart.

The previous owner informed me that the eyes were missing ever since his family acquired them. The dolls were found in an old abandoned farm house and were the only remnants that survived a house fire. It is believed that these dolls have the spirit of three blind souls. The owner spoke of instances where his daughter would say her dolls were making noise at night walking around her room tripping over things and keeping her awake. He said he and his wife would hear children talking from the daughter's room only to find her asleep in her bed with the 3 dolls laying together next to her. These dolls have never and will never be apart."

I chatted with the seller a bit, asking what they "do" and if they are at all "negative" because I don't want anything "negative" in my home. Then I showed the pictures to my girls and asked their opinion. They dig my funky and sometimes "dark" art, and they also know I like odd dolls. I figured if either of them said they were "creepy" or didn't like them in some way, I would not go for it. They both actually seemed a bit excited about me possibly getting them. Then I though about the "What if they freak me out and strange stuff does happen?" If that's the case, I will just give them to my mom, lol. I just think of them as three cute dolls to add to my collection.

I often wonder about "haunted" antiques. I have so many things in my home from vintage shops, wouldn't I know if something I had, had a spirit attached to it? I don't want to spend my afterlife attached to some material item. I will be saying a prayer/blessing for my new girls when they arrive. But if I hear giggles, my mom will get a late Mother's Day gift.

Well, due to life's circumstances, I haven't been the best blogger. Just too many challenges going on and I still need prayers sent my way, that the truth will be known. But summer is officially upon us and I am thrilled to just chill out with my girls and have no concerns about homework, alarm clocks or approving clothes. We can just relax some each day and I can do some of the things I love like creating art and finding good deals.

Below are some pages I recently did for a teacup book with my Marie group. The amazing Terri G. is hosting and everyone's pages are just beautiful. I can't wait to get my returns and make them into a book. I am going to make a front and back cover and maybe a couple of more pages for it as well. I'll be sure to share pics when I am done. Thank you Terri for hosting another fun event!

Last night I had some quality "girl time" with my own little princesses. I painted their finger nails and did our toes as well. Usually, I am against red. But I used a new nail "stamper" to add stars to their fingers, but was done with that procedure by the time I did our toes. I just had to take a pic of us with our matching nails though.

I also passed by a couple of garage sales yesterday, and so glad I did! I saw this old chandelier at one. The owner said it was in their house when they moved into it years ago and it's just been sitting in a box collecting MOUNDS of dust. I got it for, are you ready for this.... 5 bucks baby! Woohoo! It's perfect for my bedroom and my amazing electrical engineering husband is going to put it up for me and make it light up. After reattaching the crystals, I wore wet socks on both hands and wiped it clean. I will need to do it about 50 more times though, lol. It already looks beautiful!

And then I saw this wardrobe at another garage sale that I just happened to pass. I thought they would want a fortune for it, but it was marked $20 or offer. I drove away, but then went back because I knew I would kick myself. The owner had purchased it at an antique store years ago. And guess what I got it for? That's right, ten dollars baby! Can you say "WOOHOO"! I am going to clean it up and put some beautiful knobs on the drawers and use it, somewhere. I haven't decide yet, but for $10 I will find a spot.

I hope that you are all doing fabulously and staying cool during the beginning of summer, or warm for the beginning of winter if you are on that side of the planet, lol. I miss my blogging world and will hopefully be back very soon. I have so much to share. It has just taken a backseat for the moment, but will become a part of my weekly life again one day. The Process of Swapping

I love doing beaded charm swaps with my Marie Antoinette group. We have done soldered silver with yellow, pink with silver, celery green with silver, red with vintage brass, and blue with vintage brass. I think that's all of them. Now we are going to do a crystal, white and pearl with silver beaded charm swap. Everyone creates 25 beaded charms and gets the same in return (plus a few little extras from me).

I am blessed to work with some amazing artists. And they always let me know how much they appreciate my job as hostess. I love doing it though for selfish reasons. Naturally I love getting all of those gorgeous chrams. But I really love it at the end when everyone receives their returns with joy. I love knowing that they have a smile on their face and had a good experience.

Many have asked me how I go about sorting the charms all out. It seems kind of complicated, but I have created a system and I promised the group I would show them how it's done. So here it is... feel free to laugh if you like. There is probably a much easier way to do it but this "system" works for me. And once I begin, I CAN'T stop because it will mess my system up. Everyone knows that when Mama is sorting out the swap charms, she CANNOT be disturbed! LOL

Everyone has a paper plate with their name on it as well as a large zip lock bag.

All of those wonderful packages of charms are gathered together and kept in their original packaging.

First batch to sort. That person's plate is removed so that they don't have any of their own charms put onto their plate.

Next, the charms are added to each participants plate as evenly as possible and I keep a tally of how many charms are on their plate. A person can receive two to four charms from the same person and I try to give them as many different charms as possible. Even when sorting the next participants charms, I try to mix it up as much as possible if there are similar charms or beads.

Next batch to sort (and yes I was in my pj's). Remove that participants plate and sort their beads to give into piles of "similar". Next, distribute those beauties out!

Keep a running tally so everyone gets their 25!

Hello Ohm, my beautiful and devoted dog. I'm sorry, you can't help. But if you lay still, you can keep me company. Just DON'T distract me. And that is why Killer the one year old wiener pup is NOT aloud to join us. He zooms around all crazy, oh my gosh!

Until I am all done!

Then, I put each plate into a large zip lock bag. That way I can look through each participants beads, make sure they have the correct number and none of their own charms (which can get a tad confusing when I have participants with the same first name) and make sure they have a good variety and few that are the same. Variety is the spice of life you know!

Once that is done, I can put them in a pretty bag, tie then with a ribbon and send them on their way.

Then I put all of the plates and zip locks away for the next swap. And then the REAL fun begins.....

Drooling over the returns that I received and deciding how to use them. It's such a fun swap and I look forward to many more. Thank you so much to all of those who have joined in, their hard work and for the joy they brought to our faces!

New Art

So, life is still being a challenge right now, but I know God will get us through it. I've made two really cool pieces of art. The first one is VERY dark and I might post it on my other blog eventually. Still have one more item to apply to the canvas, all written in french and dealing with the darkness and lies that are plaguing us right now. It's a heart that feels as if it has been squeezed, featuring a cool rubber stamp by Michael deMeng (OMG he is SO amazing) with all sorts of pieces around it, each with it's own meaning behind it. It's super creepy, but when I told my girls it was an expression of how I was feeling they replied, "That's really cool". They want to show it to all who visit our home and I have to remind them that it is private. Don't think their little friends would appreciate it too much or their parents for that matter. The other piece is now complete and shown below. I love how it came out. I started with a 30x15ish sized canvas, covering it with old french ledger pages. The rest just came together as if meant to be....

I love these frozen Charlottes with dark hair. They are unique and harder to find so they are that much better in my eyes.

I don't usually use original photos, but for this piece I used all original items, no copies. I puchased these two photos together and I really do think they are the same little girl.

My oldest daughter had the idea of putting this nicho on the canvas, so I flew with it! And my youngest helped to glue on all of those vintage MOP buttons. She was so proud, as was I.

I seem to be in a "red" zone right now. I love old vintage monogrammed tea towels and trims. Can't seem to get enough. Hope you like my piece. I am going to hang it on the wall in my entry. Hope you are all doing well and having lots of creative fun!

Oh the challenges of life. I seem to have many this year. Send prayers please, that the truth will be known. And thus the lack of posts here on my blog.

Yesterday we had some serious storms stirring in the air. The wind was unbelievable and it went perfectly with the mood of my day. My hopes are that they were storms of truth beginning to flow in from God. I took so many pictures. It seemed as if I were on the bottom of the ocean floor, watching the stormy waves above my head. But this pic really stood out to me. Do you see the baby doll head?

And you know I love my German doll heads! I just can't get enough and I have a ton of Botox bottles to use to make some more Botox shrines with, so I had to have more heads to make into those wonderful angels, fighting off the Migraine Monster. I really need to get my last shrine framed in a shadow box for my nerologist. She is ready to display it in the waiting room and take it with her to Europe this summer to show at a nerological convention and hopefully get published in some neurology magazines.

My favorite stop for my doll heads... Retro Cafe Art, of course! Kristen sent me a couple with an open mouth. They are my favorite and will stay in my possession. I need to post a pic of the other one as well! She even trims them even so I can use them in my art more easily. Love that girl! And you should see the huge Charlotte doll I just got from her. Amazing!

A Wonderful Gift

Wow! I haven't posted for a while! Now that I am feeling better, I have oddly been pleased to resume my duties as maid, taxi driver, homework enforcer, nurse, laundry keeper and pet walker. My Mom also had knee replacement surgery and is seems to be getting better. What a crazy life, but a very blessed one. I am so fortunate and thank God every single day.

Another thing that I am blessed with is great friends. Lots and lots of caring and giving friends. Imagine this... you're laying in a hospital bed after major surgery. You hurt like you know what, on a liquid diet and have a dreaded catheter. You're also slightly drugged on pain killers and don't feel like doing a thing. Just when you are ready to break down and cry, your husband walks in with loads of mail for you. Talk about perfect timing!

My wonderful friends from the Maire Antoinette Group I am in had put together a great surprise for me. My friend Terri put together a front and back cover for a tag book of get well wishes. Oddly, that was the first package I opened. Next came many, many more containing tags for my book and other goodies to cheer me up. I was so incredible touched and tears came to my eyes. How blessed am I to have such caring friends in my life. I finally put my book together and just had to share it with you all.

Marie Antoinette Valentine Gala

If your a usual visitor of my blog, then you know how much I love the Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group. I have made some amazing friends and the art swapping ain't so bad either, lol. I love that we are all serious about our art and doing our best but also very supportive of one another.

A couple of weeks ago, we had our second Gala. Our first one was during Halloween and was hysterical! Our last one had a Valentine theme and the time flew by way too fast. We all met up to chat and had games and giveaways. It was a huge success and we all learned so much more about one another. We also learned how goofy we can all be. Imagine if we were in the same room. I would be laughing so hard, I would have to wear diapers.

Below is the amazing gift that I won from the super talented Melanie from Artful Interludes. She is a wonderful artist and a dear friend all rolled into one. Melanie comes up with these difficult riddles and trivia questions. But I won the first one and was giddy for the rest of the day, because I knew that whatever was inside this gorgeous box would be wonderful!

See what I mean! I'm going to be having fun with these treasures for a few months! And so many of these items, like the charms, and cake, and flowers, were handmade by her. What a generous gift! Thank you SO Much Melanie! The best gift, of course, is the fact that we have become much closer over the last few months and I know she is a true friend and has already been so supportive and inspiring to me!

Le Bebe de Flottement Stupefiant !!!

I am really tired of sitting around the house, taking the time to heal. I want to go to my favorite antique store SO BADLY that it is not even funny! However, I have had the opportunity to finally get some art work done. My studio is a mess from where I have had my hubby bring stuff out for me, and then it just stays there because I can't really put it away.

Some time ago, when I found out I had to have surgery, I took this little dress form and cut the tummy out. It finally occurred to me that these little gals are hollow and I could maybe make something cool. I just kept thinking of making something to say, "Just because I don't have my uterus anymore, doesn't mean I'm still not a woman". I was really crushed and disturbed about the whole idea at first. But with all of the other "stuff" that was going on, it all just had to be done. I will be better in the long run. In fact, I already am.

I have been obsessed with the cool theater collage sheets from Alpha Stamps. I really felt that this gal needed to be made into a theater, so I went through my stash to find the one that would fit the best. And of COURSE it is the "Theatre Francais". lol. After looking through some goodies, I came across this cool little baby that I have had for a while now. I don't remember where I got it though. I know there are similar ones at Retro Cafe Art and keep thinking that I got it from Kristin, who is the owner. She has such amazing, vintage dolls and I have spent a small fortune on her frozen Charlottes and her doll heads.

So, I would now like to present.....

My husband thinks I'm weird. But he knew that long before he married me, lol. I think it is cool as hell and LOVE how it turned out!

I had some other great embellishments from Alpha Stamps, like the center rose on the "theatres" neck. It's from the set Je t'Adore Accoutrements and the wonderful Brass Shell Corners, which I just can't seem to get enough of!

Hope you can appreciate my sense of humor on this one. I need to give the amazing baby a name now. Any suggestions?

Etsy Artist Suffers Tragic Loss - Please Help

Fellow Etsy artist Cindy, from Designed By Lucinda, has suffered a tragic loss. An accidental fire took the lives of her son, several beloved pets, and destroyed their home of over fifteen years.

On Thursday, February 3rd an accidental fire took her home, pets, and claimed the life of her 11 year old son, Kevin. No words can convey the shock and sadness we feel, Cindy is an active and valued member of our community and we share in her grief during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts, prayers and most profound sympathies are with Cindy and her family.

Oh how I would love to win the lottery, so that I could purchase one of these! It would be perfect in my studio! I love old cabinets like these. They have so much character to them. There are a few on ebay. Just look under spool or thread cabinet. And feel free to purchase one for me as a gift, if you like. LOL!

Printers Trays & Treasures

Another fun project, sorting items into printers trays. I love being on Alpha Stamps Design Team. I have all of my items from Alpha Stamps in a dresser including all of my awesome charms and embellishments. When I create a piece, I like to use lots of these items. So, I decided to sort them all into one spot. That way, I can remember everything. I have one compartment that holds current goodies to use, and will then sort them into the correct compartment after I am done with my work. I like to just sit back and look at the items I have to use in my art. Sometimes it causes a light-bulb to go off in my head and gets my creative juices going.

Here's another collection that I recently made. I've actually added more to it since I did this, but I love having all of these vintage goodies together. I have a tendency to hoard them for a bit, but then I will be working on some altered art and a piece seems to call out to be added to it. I love looking for vintage goodies like these.

Thank Goodness For Paper & Glue

I started working in this glue book some time ago. I'm glad that I had kept everything gathered together like some vintage papers, collage images and patterned papers. Add some brown ink, scissors and glue and you have an easy activity. One couldn't ask for anything better when recovering from surgery.

I added to the inside cover. Just some tissue paper, a sticker and one word, "Natural".

Another easy page on the left hand side. An image of bathing beauties, some blue floral print and a couple of numbers.

I love old script so that was used for the background. Some torn paper scraps, bird images, egg stickers, done! The moth on the left was just pretty so I added it but don't know if I will do anymore on that page.

And a couple of final images, but still need to add more. The point is, it's nice to have this old ledger and be able to do some simple collage work. It's very rewarding, especially when you glance through the whole book and is easy on the body.

Fabric Hearts

Once again, my beloved MAMA group has helped me to grow. My dear friend Terri from Designs By Terri Gordon, blessed us with this pattern and even a tutorial on how to create one of these fabric hearts for our self. I was a tad nervous, being new to sewing on a machine, but loved the idea and just had to give it a try. After all, if you don't try, you will never learn.

I had several vintage goodies to add to it as well that I had not used yet. I tend to hoard them for a bit first. On the outside there are several MOP buttons, (one in flower center that is more detailed and more strung onto seam binding) as well as a vintage brass laundry pin which holds the heart closed.

On the inside, I used a vintage flower, a vintage brass tag from Paris, vintage hat pins and some layers of lace. When trying to decide what to put on the left side of the open heart, I realized I had "accidentally" made a pocket. What a perfect spot for another vintage find, a frozen Charlotte doll.

"Hello. I'm a little frozen Charlotte doll with a loin cloth. Nice to meet you."

One World One Heart 2011

It's time for the FINAL One World One Heart Event! I can't believe this is the fifth year! I've been super busy lately and had major surgery, but decided that I could set up a little something to pass along to one lucky winner. This event has brought me many new friends and hopefully during this final year it will once again.

Below is a post I did in June of 2008. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago, that I started to blog. I have come so far as an artist since I began in 2007 and have had some great opportunities and made some fabulous friends along the way. The post is about my mad obsession for old Ledgers. Imagine how many more I have collected since the two plus years I posted this. I even have a fabulous old french one from the 1800s. They fascinate me!

So, I thought that I would gift one lucky winner, a collection of some vintage ledger pages. They are fabulous to use in your altered art, but also to just view and appreciate. And hopefully, I will win some new friends with similar interests and stories to tell.

My Love of Vintage Ledgers - June 2008

I adore vintage ledgers. I love to think of the clothes the person who was writing in them had on and how the world was at that time. I love the size of the pages and the way they are numbered and I especially love the beautiful penmanship that people once took such pride in. Any time I see altered art that contains ledger pages, it is just that more beautiful in my eyes.

This is my collection. Some I use in my own altered art, and some I just flip though and read what was written on the aged pages.

Even the outside of the ledgers are beautiful, most made of soft leather and just a piece of art within itself.

This is one of my newest. It isn't as old as my favorite, but so beautiful.

The above pages, I will keep just to look at when I have a spare moment. I love how the "S" was formed by it's creator.

This is another one of my newest ones. I don't think I will ever part with any of it's pages though. My original intention was to use it in my artwork and to sell some of the pages. Look at that beautiful binding! This ledger is huge!

I have spent a lot of time reading this one. It is especially interesting to me since I am a former school teacher. This ledger contains information about teachers who were looking for jobs in 1886 and later. The penmanship is the same, and every single of the 200+ pages describe another applicant.

I have only found women listed in this book thus far, that are either single or widowed. The questions listed are humorous to me, the way they are worded and that they were even asked. But we all know how things have changed for women during the 100+ years since this ledger was written in. Click on the image to read more.

I Love A Good Challenge

Having to sit around and recover from surgery can get boring after a while. Especially when you can't use your stomach muscles. Crazy how those things effect every move you make. So yesterday I decided I wanted to make my own blog header. I worked all day on it, taking my time, adding personal images and stupid me didn't save it. My program froze up and I was SO MAD, mostly at myself for being an idiot and not saving my work. I blame the pain killers, although I am not taking them anymore. Luckily, I learned how to do "Ctrl PrtScn" (thank you Leslie & Bella) and actually saved a copy of the work. Now granted, I had to do a ton of editing, but it came out better then I could have ever imagined. I'm proud of how far I have come digitally, artistically, all because I have a blog. I love that my header shows the many sides of me. I'm a little french, but dark. Pink yet Black. "Tasteful" yet odd at times. I hope you like it too.

Did you know that Blogger has all of these new formats now? I was going nuts, and was surprised to find those black birds that go along with my Raven so well. I love Ravens. I would love to have a Raven rescue. Okay, maybe I'm not getting enough adult conversation right now because I am rambling.

Below is an example of a challenge I had. The amazing Leslie, who is the Queen of Alpha Stamps, told the design team that we didn't HAVE to decorate the cover of this book, but gave us some enthusiasm to try. I just had to find a way to make it "pop" and was thrilled when everyone liked what I did. It took me a while to figure out how to make a chipboard heart into two doors, but I did it and I really enjoyed creating this book. I still have a couple of pages that I am going to finish up for it. Gosh I love being on that design team!

Imagine my surprise when Bella, we'll call her the dark princess of Alpha Stamps, lol. Imagine my surprise when she wrote about my work on the Alpha Stamps Blog. It's one thing to be proud of your own work, and have the hope that others will like it. But then when you find out they do like it, well, it just makes it that much better. Leslie, Bella and the other gals have been so supportive and believe in me which is an achievement I am so proud of. I can finally say, "I'm an artist" and believe it myself. Don’t you just love how the heart opens up to reveal the gorgeous bird underneath? I'm Alive

Hello Everyone! I hope that life has been treating you fabulously! I have been resting for the past couple of weeks since my surgery and am glad to FINALLY be up and about a bit.

My surgery went well, however I didn't know it was going to hurt this much or that my incision was going to be so huge. Ugh! I was a mess before surgery, especially after a two day liquid diet and the threat of more icy to make the roads un-drivable (Is that even a word?). I think at that time, I would have walked if I had to. I did not want to go through the anxiety of waiting and wanted to get through the horrible fear of dying that I had. Feels good to say that now that it is all said and done. I really was scared that it was going to be the end for me. I kept saying, "God, please let me live. I'm not ready to die yet". So, enough said except for Thank You God for letting me live and for letting everything go well.And thanks to all of you for your support and prayers! They really worked, especially when it came to getting my IV in quickly. I had the best nurse and she got it in LITERALLY the first time in less then ten seconds! WooHoo!

Below are some chip board hearts that I made for Alpha Stamps (before surgery). Oh how I love Alpha Stamps! I think I spend even more money now that I am on the design team, because I just want everything. I've always felt they have unique items for my art and now I get to indulge even more!

My Dearest Sandee Puppy Love,

It was one year ago today that I received that horrific phone call that you had been hit by a car. My heart hasn't healed, and I know it never will. Words cannot say how deeply we miss you and how much we love you. Ohm misses you so much as well and it took him a long time to move ahead in life without you. I wish I could know for certain that you are okay and someplace at peace. There is such a huge hole in my heart that just aches so badly when I think of you. I wish I could just hug you one last time and watch you run around all crazy and happy like you used to do. Thank you for always taking care of us and for all of your love. You could never be replaced Sandee, and I hope one day I will be able to play with you again. How blessed we were to have the few years with you that we did. Run, play, chase butterflies and be at peace my dear pup.

Caz's Private Beach Blog Party II

It's that time again folks! Time for another one of Caz's FABULOUS parties and this year she has gone tropical! Happy Birthday to my BBFF! May this new year bring you every wish from your many birthday cakes!

Now Caz has always been a big fan to men of all size, shapes and colors. And Caz always gets the man she wants, except for my Brandon, of course. And now, my dear friend is OBSESSED with Ian Somerhalder from The Vampire Diaries. Or some of you may know him as Damon Salvatore. I think she likes his "bad boy" image from the show. She's always liked to role play as well so I guess this gives her a new avenue of excitement, lol.

And I can't say that I blame her. I mean, look at him! He's gorgeous! Not that I would ever try to touch her man. I have my own. They are a cute couple and he is beyond obsessed with her. Caz just has a way of doing that to a guy.

I love the picture of Caz above with the boys. That Ian is just so silly, and she looks so cute! You could just eat them all up!

So, Ian took Caz out for a wonderful birthday bash, with just the two of them. I know it started with a fabulous massage, then to drinks and dinner. I know he had purchased some one of a kind jewels for her, as well as a new black Jag, some costumes (for his eyes only) and access to all of the watercolors and art supplies she could ever need. She is a fabulous artist you know! And then, he took her to some surprise spot, but would not elaborate because he told me it was "private" and some things are just between he and Caz. Little does he know. BBFFs share everything!

So even though Caz is having a Beach Party this year, she still had to arrive red carpet style. She's such a DIVA! She let Paul tag along (that other dude from the show) out of pity. He's just so sweet, it's nauziating, ugh!

Ian and Caz got right to the party. As if we can't tell! I don't know what the hell Ian was thinking, trying to pull this Borat crap off. Hey, as long as he keeps Caz smiling, then I'm ok with it.

And you know I ALWAYS have to make a grand entrance. So this year, Brandon dressed up like Ronald McDonald, I held on tight, and we parachuted down to the party. It was a hoot! I didn't think I could ever get my legs wrapped that tightly around Brandon, bahahaha!

I know, I know. Can you believe it? Most of the time Caz and I both have several men with us, but we are both hooked. Brandon and I have been together for a few years now and couldn't be more in love. Don't we look fabulous! I just love to touch him and have him sing to me. He is just heavenly and takes my breath away. Good thing he forgave me for scaring the crap out of him that first day we met, when I snuck back stage. He told me he was kinda freaked out, but as soon as our eyes met, he instantly fell in love with me. I know, so sweet! You can read more about that amazing day here:

A Dream Come True From Last Year On This Day

And look what he drew in the sand. I love how my zaniness has rubbed off on him and he can be goofy with me now.

So, I promised myself that this year I was NOT going to get drunk and crazy. But that Caz just eggs me on and is such a bad influence. Below we were just a tad "pissed" as her British self would say, and we cracked up about our words that have totally different meanings, like rubber and spanner and fanny. Bahahaha!

And Ian, that boy is a match for us. He is just CRAZY and had us hanging on these swings, acting like monkeys. Caz told me he loved swings, but this is just silly!

Then I ended up with these people that I didn't even know. Caz and Ian ventured off somewhere and left me all alone. I only remember slipping over that railing back there and slamming my ribs onto one of those teal poles. Ouch! You should see the bruise, and I left a dent as well. Not good, but that's what I get for consuming so much vodka!

So, I don't really remember this part, but apparently, Caz and Ian found me laying on the ground after they were done with their business. Poor Brandon got stuck with a mob of fans and is just so sweet and caring to us. Especially me, lol. They all loaded me in the golf cart and stuck me under an umbrella on the beach to "sleep it off" a bit. I don't know why they felt the need to take this picture of me all green and sick looking. They were probably falling over themselves drunk, laughing at my expense. But that's okay because I would probably do the same thing. No, not probably, I WOULD do the same thing but would probably go the next step further and make them look stupid in the picture as well. Thanks for not doing that to me guys!

Ian wanted Caz to have something new, and different this year. I don't remember helping with the presentation of this, but I'm sure I had a lot of fun. This group of dudes were the life of the party!

Ian finally had to pass out for a bit, but not before giving Caz her last present.......

Happy Birthday to my dear, dear friend. We've heard each other's voices, have never met in person (not yet) but have become so close. Caz wrote the sweetest poem for me, about our friendship and it just touched me so and brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for that Caz, and for being such a good friend and for all of the laughter over the years. I hope our paths cross soon and look forward to many more parties and laughs with you. Have a fabulous weekend and know how much you are loved!

Countdown To Surgery

Happy New Year everyone! Hope your holidays were as wonderful and blessed as mine! I guess it is time for me to do my, "I'll be gone from my blog for a while" post. My surgery is on the 11th and I'm starting to get a little freaked out. I have been trying to have a sense of humor, cracking jokes and all. But the fact of the matter is I am a little bit terrified. I am having a hysterectomy as well as two other procedures. Don't want to venture into the "TMI" situation, lol. I found a really informative and supportive website called HysterSisters, if any of you find yourself in the same situation.

A part of me feels selfish about this. When my doctor told me I had to have a hysterectomy, I lost it. I couldn't stop crying. I know I am SO BLESSED, but the thought kept coming to mind that I would never have a son. We weren't planning on having more children, but if it happened, we would be very excited. Then again, as a now 42 year old, I don't know if I could handle it physically or mentally. Oddly, I had an AMAZING reading with psychic Rebecca Rosen a few years ago. She told me that it would be better for "me" not to have more children, but that if I did have another child, it would be a healthy baby boy. Why did she have to say that? I envision this precious little boy angel, sitting on the clouds watching down on me and feel this ache in my heart that I won't be giving him life. I know, I am WAY too sentimental and kind of weird.

It isn't a life threatening situation. Just a situation to have a better quality of life. A much better quality of life. And then I think, but what if the worst case scenario happened? That would be so selfish of me to do that to my family. But if I don't do it now, then it is just going to get much worse. And if it all does go well, then by me having a better quality of life, I can do more things with my girls and build more memories with my family.

I just had a good cry. As you know, I LOVE to create art. Did I tell you that my neurologist wants to PURCHASE my Botox Shrine AND show it to the company that sells Botox. I get Botox injections to help with my migraines and the Cervical Dystonia in my neck. I was just so honored that she saw the beauty in the madness of my shrine. You can see it here: Botox Shrine.

So, back to my art... I won't be able to participate in any swaps or make any art for a while. That thought just breaks my heart. It is so therapeutic for me. And, I won't be able to participate in the next Itty Bitty Book. I have participated in every single book except for one and I think there have been about 24 books now? I have them all in a display case in my studio and just love them. Joining Mary Ann in the creation of her books is one of the first things I started to do as a "real" artist. So, needless to say, I am really upset to not be in this next one.

Because of the type of surgery I am having, my doctor told me that I basically can't do anything for four weeks and it will take me about six to completely heal. I have been trying to "train" my family and prepare them for this, but I am really nervous and don't think my girls completely understand. Hopefully they will all appreciate me and my cleaning a bit more after this, lol.

I have stocked up on beads for my next bead swap with the Marie group I am with, have plenty of books, both novels and artistic, and have purchased several new games so that the girls and I can play once I am up to it. I'm sure this procedure will help me to appreciate a lot of the little things in life as well.

Happy Holidays

Wow, my poor blog feels all alone. I can't believe Christmas is only two days away. And we might have a white one which would be fabulous! I've been so busy the past few weeks with sick children, snow days, and busily trying to get things in order before my surgery. I will be out of commission for a few weeks after that, but hopefully will be able to post before that.

For all of my friends, family and visitors, may you have a wonderful holiday and a joyous new year. I appreciate your visits and comments so much. And for my good friends, please know how much I love and appreciate you all. My hopes were to get Christmas cards out this year, but I have failed miserably. I'm so sorry I didn't get a hand written card out but please know how dear you are to me and that I am thinking of you all. Stay safe and many blessings!

The Beauty in Life

There are so many little things in life that many of us don't appreciate. I have been a bird lover for many years now. While trapped in my home one year due to a blizzard, I noticed the many different birds that came to my bird feeders. I grabbed my bird book and started to identify them but there was one little bird that I could not figure out. It was driving me crazy, so I contacted a local Ornithological group to get some answers. Little did I know how that little pine warbler would add to my life.

I ended up joining the group and would go out on these adventures to view birds in the wild. Standing near a flock of Sand Hill Cranes and viewing Bald Eagles was utterly breathtaking. I began to realize just how different each bird was and appreciated all of their beauty. I even had a bird watching club when I was a teacher and those little kids loved it when we spotted something new.

When traveling, I would just have to purchase a copy of a local bird book, so that I could add more birds to my "life list". Living in Great Britain, (the British Robin is my all time fave. Their littler personalities are wonderful) and traveling to places like Japan, Europe, the Caymans and other vacation spots, gave me the chance to see some really beautiful birds.

Here in Tennessee, I appreciate living in "the city" but being so close to "the country". It's common to see birds of prey, which I just love! I always have my camera with me, but never seem to get that perfect shot.

Lately, while taking the little ones to school, I've noticed a falcon and a hawk that love to sit on the telephone wires and hunt near a creek. But it seems like I just happen to leave my camera at home on those days or I am not able to stop because I am picking the girls up from school. But yesterday was different.

While driving home, I noticed my friend the hawk hanging out on the wire. I just HAD to turn around and try to get that shot. The girls were with me, and I also had our dog Killer with us, (named after my favorite band). I found a place to park, got out of the car and was able to snap a couple of shots before it swooped down and disappeared.

I was so bummed, but happy that I got at least one shot. I drove further down the road, to see if I could find it, but had no luck. So we continued to venture home. All of a sudden, I noticed a huge hawk enjoying it's meal on the side of the road. ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! "Oh my gosh! Girls! Look! How awesome!". I turned around and found a place to park the car. I took so many pics!

I was parked across the street from it, so I decided to turn the car around and park on the other side. Unfortunately, but fortunately for me, the hawk was "used" to the commotion all around and it just continued to eat. And then, I had just HAD to try and get closer. So I got out of the car slowly and quietly walked around to the side of my car.

"Yea,I see you stupid human. Don't come any closer or I will literally rip your flesh". I know, it was stupid, but such a wonderful moment, to be so close, I had to try for that closer shot and was loving the experience. The girls were in awe as well, but Killer would have gotten his butt kicked if he even attempted this bird. He's a wiener/terrier mix.

Lots of people noticed me, while driving by, but failed to notice what was right in front of them. Or maybe, they just didn't care. But I was amazed to watch this beautiful bird of prey as it ate what it had captured. I don't know if it was the same hawk from the wire, but it was just magical, having that moment to appreciate it.

Be sure to appreciate all of the little things in life and keep your eyes open to the beauty around you. It might just be an amazing experience!

The Killers Newest Christmas Single For Project Red

Today is the digital release of The Killers new Christmas song "Boots". This will be the fifth song released since 2006. Other songs include "A Great Big Sled", which is the only one I do not have a CD copy of, "Don't Shoot Me Santa" which has the cutest video, "Joseph, Better You Than Me" with special guest Elton John, and last years, "Happy Birthday Guadalupe" which I love and play all year round.

I'm really proud of "my boys" for always taking the time to help this great cause, as all proceeds from the Christmas singles benefit the Project Red campaign, which is a Global Fund to fight Aids in Africa. Then again, after meeting them and experiencing the kindness they showed to me, I am not at all surprised. The fame has not gone to their heads and their hearts are so loving.

Masquerade Mask Swap

I feel like I have neglected my blog lately. I've had a lot going on and am preparing myself and my home for my upcoming surgery in January. I'm going to be out of commission for 4-6 weeks and am hoping things go well so that I can at least create my art. So please send some prayers my way. I sure would appreciate it. What Would You Do With This?

I need some ideas... I've had this piece for a bit now. The compartments are different sizes in width so there is only so much I can put in it. I also thought about laying it on it's side. I love old letter trays and items like this. What would you put in it or use it for?

Let Them Eat Cake

I can't believe I forgot to share this with all of you. We had a TON of pumpkins to carve. Each of my girls carved two, and I carved one. While trying to think of what to carve, I suddenly had a light bulb go on brightly over my head. Da, I make enough Marie Antoinette art, so what could be better?

Here are all of our pumpkins together.

My oldest carved this one, all by herself. She was tired while working on her second pumpkin and didn't finish it. It had a Peace sign on it. Funny how girls her age love that image.

And my youngest made the two above. She drew the images on her pumpkins, and her Papa (daddy) helped her to carve it out. It was a lot of fun, even though my husband burned most of the pumpkin seeds. Oh well, always next year and it's not as important as the pumpkin pie feast I am already enjoying.

Alpha Stamps "Skeletons In The Attic" Book Swap

These are the pages that I created for Alpha Stamps "Skeletons In The Attic" Book Swap, hosted by the devouring Bella Ayers from Crushed Velvet and Roses. I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed this swap. It was so nice to visit my "dark side" and create with these fab collage sheets from Alpha Stamps. I seem to be obsessed with skeletons, skulls, ravens and black cats.

It was really hard for me to pass my pages on. I felt so close to all of my little characters, especially my "mother and child" page. But, I do have pictures.

Consider yourself warned, that new "dark" artwork will be posted. I was working on some while waiting for my Botox injections at my neurologists office. I get the shots to help with my migraines. I guess they must be pretty bad if I am getting these shots because I have a HUGE phobia of needles. I asked my doctor (who is a Saint in my eyes) if I could keep the Botox bottle to use in my artwork. She said, "Sure, but you have to show me what you make with it". The great part is that she wants pictures of my art, to display in the lobby. That way other patients can see it and I'm sure, relate. She also is going to submit my work to some neurology journals and magazines. How cool would it be to share my work with others and maybe bring them some relief or joy in knowing that they are not alone. I am super excited and already in the works of my altered Botox shrine.

Funny how I have a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" approach with my art work. At times, I have Marie Antoinette all pink and sparkly. And then, I have my darker side that seems to be coming out more and more. "Mommy, why do you have skulls and spooky stuff all over your studio?" French Monarch. Born Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, the fifteenth child and youngest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and his wife Maria Theresa of Austria. Maria Antonia had little real education. She was flighty and read almost nothing. Maria was betrothed to the dauphin Louis, grandson of France's King Louis XV. Maria Antonia left Vienna for France in April 1770, when she was fourteen. Marie refused to involve herself in politics in France, possibly because she lacked any real knowledge or interest in it. Louis XV died of smallpox May 10, 1774 and the new king, Louis XVI, and his queen Marie Antoinette ascended the throne. In December 1778 Marie gave birth to Marie Thérèse Charlotte. The princess was followed by Louis Joseph in 1781, Louis Charles in 1785 and Sophie Béatrix in 1786. Marie became much less extravagant and was devoted to her children. She began to dress with more restraint and she refused to buy any more jewels for her personal collection. She was, however, fiercely criticised for building a small mock-village for herself at Versailles in 1786. Popular hatred against the queen accelerated rapidly after the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. In 1787, her youngest daughter, Sophie Béatrix died shortly before her first birthday. The queen was devastated. Not long after, it was found that the Dauphin Louis-Joséph, was terminally ill with tuberculosis. The child's condition deteriorated and Marie spent most of her time nursing him during his last months. He died at the age of seven. Meanwhile, revolution exploded in Paris. After the Bastille fell to the mob many courtiers fled France, Marie hoped to escape also. Louis, however, decided that they would stay at Versailles. The queen refused to leave him. A mob from Paris marched on Versailles on October 5, Marie repeated her plea that they escape. The king refused. The royal family were forced to return with the mob to Paris. They were taken to the dilapidated Tuileries Palace. By 1791 the royal family decided to escape to a royalist stronghold in the east of France. Their flight was foiled at the town of Varennes and they were forced back to Paris by local republicans. On September 21, the National Convention abolished the monarchy. The royal family were then moved to the Temple Fortress and imprisoned. Louis was tried for treason on December 11. He was condemned to death on January 17. He was allowed one last farewell supper with his family and was taken to the guillotine the next day. When Marie heard the crowds cheer his death, she collapsed. She never truly recovered from his death. She began to suffer from convulsions and fainting fits. She also lost her appetite and much weight. On July 3, 1793, commissioners arrived in the royal family's cell to remove the Dauphin from his family. He had been proclaimed Louis XVII by royalists factions and the republicans decided to hold the eight-year-old in solitary confinement. Marie shielded her son with her body, refusing to give him up. When the commissioners threatened to kill her if she did not hand the child over, she still refused. She held them off for two hours before she was forced to stand down to save the life of her daughter. She would never see him again. She was brought to trial on October 14. When she entered the courtroom, most people were shocked at her appearance. She was emaciated, prematurely aged, exhausted and care-worn. She was condemned to death on October 15. On the following morning a guard arrived to cut her hair and bind her hands. She was forced into a cart and paraded through the streets of Paris for over an hour before reaching the guillotine. At 12:15 Marie Antoinette was executed and her head exhibited to a cheering crowd. Her body was then taken and dumped in an unmarked mass grave in the Rue d'Anjou. Royalists, who saw her as a martyr, later recovered her body and reburied it in the Bourbon crypt in Paris. (bio by: Iola)

This plaque marks the spot where the guillotine stood during the French Revolution. It was here that Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, Danton, RobespierreÊand some 2,800 others between November 1792 and May 1795 were beheaded in public.

Rest in peace Marie Antoinette and thank you for all of the inspiration you have given me over the years.

My First Works For Alpha Stamps

Imagine how happy I was to find that my first bit of work for Alpha Stamps would be related to Marie Antoinette! As soon as I saw this stamp set, I knew I had to have it! It's called Marie Antoinette Jumping Jack and I just love working with it and finding new ideas for her hair! I even included her for the cover of the current 4x4 book, "The Queen's Hair" that I am making with some fabulous artists from The Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group.

This piece has so many layers to it and it took an entire day for me to make her just right. I even sewed all of the beads onto her hair and dress. But it was worth every stitch to see how she came out.

Alpha Stamps Slide Mailer Swap

I can't believe I am already in the Halloween mood, and it is still a month away! I participated in a Slide Mailer Swap with the Alpha Stamps Yahoo Group. I have never created anything with a slide mailer, although I've had some for over a year now. I really enjoyed this project and hope that whoever receives these thinks they are spooktacular! Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Now I've always loved black cats, especially during Halloween. But now I seem to be obsessed with skulls as well. Makes my Halloween art work much easier.

I took some cheese cloth and dipped it down into some watered down black paint to make it gray. I wrapped this creepy dude all up with it to add to his shredded cape.

I think these little coffin charms are so cool! You open it up and there's a skeleton inside.

I really like this little devil dude from the collage sheet Skeleton Slides. He seems so comical and fun.

I don't think this guy feels the same way, lol.

The above images come from the stamp set Poison. After stamping the images, I painted them with different colors of Smooch Pearlized Accent Ink. I love that stuff!

I love black cats. Not only in vintage Halloween decor, but the real deal as well. I have two black cats, full black and if anything they have brought me good luck. Then again, Friday the 13th always seems to be a good day for me as well. And look, another little skeleton friend!

The stage in the background (Red Slide Mailer Curtains) actually contains several layers. and I really like the way the singing cat pops off of the page.

This was a fun swap and it was great to get in touch with my "dark side" for a bit. But I'm far from finished. Stayed tuned for some Halloween Marie ATCs. Fabric Tags

I recently joined a fabric tag swap, hosted by the amazing Terri Gordon, with the Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group. The only problem was that I still had not learned how to use the sewing machine. Ugh! This swap, I thought, would force me to finally accomplish that task. And guess what? I finally did! Now granted, I am no seamstress, but I sure did have fun making these tags. And lucky for me, I love the shabby look because that was the goal I had in mind with these tags.

This is the first one that I made and I was really proud of how it turned out. I really wanted it to have that vintage feel to it like the goodies I get from my friend Rhonda at Paris Gal 56. She just listed some fabulous French inspired supply boxes. They are full of several great pieces to use in your art or to just display, because any room that has them feels oh so good.

Tag number two contains some wonderful trim that I purchased from Lilla at La Vie en Rose on etsy. Lilla makes the most wonderful goodies and many have a French theme.

So now that I had the hang of it, I was off to create my tags for the swap. I printed up some images of Marie onto some cotton sheets that are made to use with ink-jet printers and copiers. www.jacquardproducts.com

I really enjoyed this swap and am thrilled to finally be sewing on a machine. It is amazing what you can do if you just believe in yourself and give it a go. Maybe in a year, I'll be making dresses for my little girls. OK, that's a pretty huge goal. I'm happy to just do little projects like these. Just remember, you'll never know if you CAN do it, unless you give it a go!

Long Time No Post

I'm still alive! Maybe my brain isn't working as well and the past couple of weeks seem to have sucked the life out of me, but I'm still here! Maybe a little odder, but still here!

Please forgive me for not posting in what seems like forever to me. I try to post at least once a week and would like to post more. Lord knows I have enough to share. My hubby went out of town last week for what was supposed to be one night in Chicago, but then had to rush out to California for the remainder of the week. Poor thing only had one pair of clothes. Good thing the company paid for some shopping! I hate it when he is gone, but am so thankful that he has a good job.

If you are a single mom, I have SO MUCH RESPECT for you! I just can't do it. It is so stressful taking care of everything. My oldest, who has ADHD, can have the WORST break downs and they SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF ME! Ugh! And you know the saying, "When it rains, it pours"? Well that is so true. Everything seemed to come up last week including the memorial service of a close family friend. I was ready to go, but the ADHD kicked in again. It was hard enough not having Papa here, but for Mama to leave for the memorial would just be drastic.

I have loads to share with you! New French goodies including the most beautiful French ledger from the 1800s. I am going to use some in my art and sell some at my Etsy shop. I have so much to list on my poor neglected Etsy shop.

I've also FINALLY started to sew on the sewing machine. My amazing husband (who learned while on three months of bed rest after a skiing accident) taught me and even wrote numbers on his machine to remind me of the order to thread it. I was so excited and really enjoyed it. Now granted, I am not the talented seamstress and am very messy. I'm sure that will improve with time, but it was perfect for the fabric tag swap I did with the Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group. I love the shabby look and it was too much fun. I will post pics soon of them and my first practice ones that I love!

I'm also working on my artwork for Alpha Stamps. I received my first Design Team Kit and felt like I had died and gone to heaven! I am creating some Marie items with a new paper line and the Alpha Stamps Marie Antoinette stamp set called Marie Antoinette Jumping Jack: Let Them Eat Cake, and also making some items with the gorgeous new items they have in for Christmas. If you haven't visited Alpha Stamps before, you are missing out! I also have two Halloween swaps I am doing with some wicked images of skeletons and black cats. I just love Halloween and black cats and have a corner of my studio dedicated to just that!

Speaking of Halloween, what do you think of my doll head collection? I have started a strange new collection of skeletons and also like dark art work with scary dolls and such. I went to the thrift shop to find some old baby dolls and got a few strange looks. When I got home, my daughter asked me, "Mama, why are you taking the heads off of those dolls?" Luckily she was not horrified by it and just shrugged her shoulders with an "OK" when I told her it was for my artwork. I'm glad my daughters accept me and my weirdness. The same weirdness that I saw in my mom as a child, which I now love. I keep telling her, "Help! I've become my mother!" When I told her about all of my doll heads, she said, "You should make a mobile out of them" being silly. But I had a mobile that I had just taken some ATCs off of and ran with the idea. So now I have a baby head mobile and wonder at times what has happened to me. Years ago, it would have scared the crap out of me!

So, I am going to hush for now. I have some art work to finish up and an art studio that needs to be cleaned up bad. Then again, that goes for my whole house at the moment. Have a fabulous week, remember to take some time for yourself, and stop by again soon!

My Big News

I am so excited to announce that I have been accepted as a Design Team Member for Alpha Stamps! I can finally shout it from the rooftops! This is really a dream come true and I am excited about this new journey! I have loved the products from Alpha Stamps for a few years now and if you have never checked them out, and you create art work like me, you really should. They have wonderful collage sheets, rubber stamps, and so many unique, quality items.

A Little Bit French

I just have to tell you about my newest friend Rhonda from A Little Bit French. Not only does she have a fabulous name, lol, but she is like a long lost French sister. I love her Etsy shop, Paris Gal 56 and have returned a few times, in case you can't tell. Be sure to click on the pictures to get a closeup view of her fabulous work!

Everything she makes has so much love in it and not even the tiniest of details is left out. When you hold one of her items, it just feels like home.

I love the colors, textures and many details in each item and have just surrounded myself.

I would love to be able to sew like this. I'm still trying to learn and am very envious of her talent.

I love these postcard pockets. Both the front and back look fabulous. And as those of you who know me know, I'm pretty much obsessed with anything that says "Paris".

Even these sewn book pages are unique and beautiful with little tags and yummies inside.

The burlap Paris pillow is full of yummy lavender and smells so wonderful. And look at that delicate lace journal. You would think it was a wonderful vintage find!

I flipped over these little books that she creates and it was hard to choose just one. They have little pockets inside and aged tags. You can even tuck some of your own favorite mementos inside.

Below is the Marie Antoinette bag that I first found and after receiving it I seem obsessed with checking out her shop daily to see what else she has listed. She just posted these fabulous lace and fabric labels with Parisian stamps that I cannot WAIT to get my hands on!

Look at all of the different types of lace and details. I can't imagine how long it took her to make it, but I know I will treasure it forever.

The great thing about Blogging and browsing through Etsy is that you find amazing artists AND form wonderful friendships. Rhonda and I chat all of the time now, and she really cracks me up at times.
